Creating Group Pages

Instructors who desire to have groups of students collaborate on projects may choose to utilize the Groups area.

For instructors, the Groups area may appear in several locations:

  • Under the Control Panel > Users and Groups > Groups
  • As an item under Tools
  • In the course navigation menu

Groups can be created one at a time or in sets. Also, Groups can be designated as Self-Enroll, allowing students to add themselves to a Group, or Manual Enroll, having the Instructor assign students to a Group.

Tools that can be made available to a Group include:

  • Collaboration: Users within the Group can create and attend Chat sessions and Virtual Classroom sessions.
  • Discussion Board: Users within the Group can create and manage their own Forums.
  • Email: Users within the Group can email individual members or the entire Group.
  • File Exchange: Users within the Group and the Instructor can upload files to the Group space.

To create a group within the Groups area:

  1. Log into your course site.
  2. Under the Control Panel, click Users and Groups > Groups.
  3. Choose whether to create a Single Group or Group Set.
  4. Name the group.
    Select Yes for Group Available.
  5. Under Tool Availability, check the Tools you would like the group to use.
  6. If you are creating a Manual Enroll Group, under Membership, select the names of those persons you want include in the group and click the arrow pointing to the right to move users from the Items to Select to the Selected Items box.
  7. Click Submit.

Note: If you are creating multiple groups, choosing Group Set speeds up the group creation process.
